Hailing from Guadalajara, Jalisco—the heartland of tequila—Juan Pablo Garciabueno has spent nearly three decades introducing distinctive Mexican spirits to the U.S. market. For those who have been in the industry long enough to remember its pioneering years, Juan Pablo’s career reaches back to the era of Robert Denton and Tequila Porfidio, early forces that helped pave the way at a time when premium tequila was only beginning to find its place in the American market. In 1997, he founded Tequila Specialist, becoming an early advocate for premium and traditionally made tequila long before the category’s global boom.
Over the years, Juan Pablo has helped introduce and develop hundreds of boutique tequila brands in the U.S. and Europe, including Arette, Casa Noble, Clase Azul, Tres Agaves, 30-30, and Oro Azul. Most notably, he was co-founder of Tequila Don Fulano, helping establish the brand and introduce its traditional, estate-produced tequila to international markets.
His search for distinctive Mexican spirits eventually extended well beyond tequila. He became the first importer of Raicilla into the United States and continued exploring lesser-known regional traditions including Bacanora, Sotol, Mezcal, distilled Pulque, and other uniquely Mexican spirits.
His timing coincided with a defining moment for tequila. In 1997—the same year the European Union formally recognized Mexico’s exclusive rights to the Tequila designation—Juan Pablo earned his business degree and launched Tequila Specialist. What began as a commitment to sharing authentic tequila grew alongside the category itself, becoming a decades-long pursuit of Mexico’s diverse distilling traditions.
